Chamber hosts Q&A with Governor Schwarzenegger

On August 24th, Governor Schwarzenegger made a stop in Goleta for an intimate question and answer session with the local business community. The Governor touched on many important issues regarding the current state budget, including his declaration that he would not sign a budget with tax increases. The governor was adamant on cutting unnecessary spending versus raising taxes.

The Governor also discussed the importance of pension reform. The current state pension plan is not sustainable and continues to cost the state billions each year. The Governor argues we should not change anything for existing employees, but reform our pension plans for all future hires.

In addition to the budget, the Governor shared his view on a few of the propositions we will see on the ballot this November. There are a number of confusing and complicated propositions this year, individuals and businesses need to be aware of. The Chamber’s public policy committee and Board of Directors have been working hard on deciphering these initiatives to support those that will help businesses.

The visit was a great opportunity for business leaders in Goleta, large and small, to hear the direction and priorities the governor has for California. In order for our local economy to grow and prosper, it is important to understand the connection at a state level. It was refreshing to hear that despite the Governor leaving office this November, he remains focused on accomplishing a lot before he goes.

The Chamber was excited to host this meeting, an important part of our Chamber mission.
